Wildlife experts then examine the results, hoping to unlock a mystery.
Could this picture of the genus Dasyprocta, commonly known as an agouti, hold the key to solving the Amazon’s deforestation puzzle? The stakes are high. The Amazon covers around 2.3 million square miles (6 million square kilometers) of land, spanning nine countries including Colombia and Brazil. Its significance to the planet’s overall health cannot be overstated.
The Alarming Reality of Deforestation
Despite its importance, the Amazon faces a grave threat. According to Amazon Conservation research, nearly 2 million hectares (almost 5 million acres) of the rainforest were deforested in 2022 — a staggering 21 percent increase from the previous year. The culprits? Farming, cattle ranching, and illegal mining operations. In Colombia alone, nearly 1 million hectares of forest vanished in 2022, primarily in northwest regions like Caquetá.
